Split-level, stairs everywhere
Split-levels and raised ranches put a short stair between every floor. Rails on both sides and good lighting help. Sometimes the main level can take a bedroom and bath.
The ranch tub-shower
A one-story ranch is a good start, but the 5-foot tub with a high wall is not. We remove it and build a walk-in shower in the same footprint.
Garage step into the house
Most Ontario ranches enter through the garage, up two or three steps. A ramp or a landing with rails solves it.
Farmhouse bath on the second floor
Older homes along Ridge Road often have the full bath upstairs. We look at turning a first-floor room into a bath.
Newer houses, different problems
Ontario grew from an iron-mining and orchard town into a place where most homes went up after the 1960s. Census data puts the median year built near 1978. Those ranches and split-levels avoid the steep stairs of a canal village house, but they come with tight hall baths and garage entries with steps.
That makes many Ontario homes good candidates for aging in place. The framing is regular, so curbless showers, blocking for grab bars and widened doors are often simpler than in a much older house.

Ontario has one permit office for the whole town, the Building Department at 1850 Ridge Road. We file and meet the inspector.

We remove the tub or shower down to the framing and build a new one with a bench, a handheld sprayer and slip-resistant tile. Walk-in tubs are available. No liners and no overlays.

Split-level fixes
You cannot remove the stairs in a split-level, but you can make them safer and move daily life to one level. A lower-level family room can become a bedroom with a nearby bath.
