A village the canal built
Weedsport did not exist until the Erie Canal came through. In 1821 Elihu and Edward Weed built a boat basin where the mill creek met the canal, and a post office followed in 1822 with Elihu as postmaster. Older Census data put the median owner-occupied home in the village at 1939 or earlier, and listings show homes on Horton and Centennial Streets built in the 1870s and 1880s.

Inside the village, permits go through the Village of Weedsport code enforcement officer, through the Village Office at 8892 South Street. Outside the village, the Town of Brutus code enforcement officer at the town municipal building, 9021 North Seneca Street. We file it.

Permits on both sides of the line
The Village of Weedsport says building permits are needed for most work and asks that you apply well ahead of the start date. Homes outside the village fall under the Town of Brutus. We know which is which and handle the application.
