Kitchen Remodeling in Savannah, NY
Big farmhouse kitchens with no counter by the stove, galley kitchens in post-war ranches, and hamlet houses with the kitchen tucked in the back. We plan, permit and build it.
Kitchens we see in Savannah
Old farm houses and post-war ranches make for a few common problems.
The farm kitchen is huge but useless
Lots of floor, not much counter, a sink under the only window and appliances scattered. An island or a peninsula can give you work space without moving walls.
A mudroom that dumps into the kitchen
Boots, dogs and barn coats all come through the kitchen door. We can add a bench, hooks and a durable floor where the back door lands.
The ranch galley
A narrow galley with one way in. Sometimes one wall can open to the dining area, and the kitchen stops feeling like a hallway.
Original cabinets, still solid
Built-in cabinets from decades ago can be sturdier than new ones. New doors, counters and hardware may be all you need.

Kitchens on settled farm floors
Many Savannah farmhouses went up before 1940, and the town was built around muck farming on low, wet ground. Old sills and joists that have sat over damp crawlspaces settle and sag, and the kitchen floor shows it first.
Stone counters crack and cabinet doors drift on a floor that is out of level. We pull up the floor where needed, sister or replace soft joists, and set cabinets dead level so the new kitchen stays square.
- Joists checked before cabinets
- Damp crawlspaces addressed
- Old wiring brought up to code for new appliances

Same layout or new?
Keeping the sink and range where they are keeps cost down. Moving them adds plumbing, gas or electrical work.
Measure your appliances
Write down what stays and what gets replaced. A bigger fridge changes the whole cabinet plan.
Permit from the town
There is no village office in Savannah, so the Town of Savannah code enforcement officer handles permits for the hamlet and all of the town. We file it.
Walkthrough
We check the floor framing from below, the panel, and the water lines.
Order before demo
Cabinets and counters get ordered before we tear out, so you are without a kitchen for as little as possible.
Before we start
Permits
Replacing cabinets in place is usually simple. New circuits, a moved sink or an opened wall need a permit from the town code office at Town Hall on North Main Street. We pull it.
Old wiring and water
Farmhouse kitchens often run on circuits never meant for a microwave, a dishwasher and a toaster at once. Many also have well water, so we plan for filters and shutoffs.
Refresh or remodel
A refresh keeps the boxes and changes counters, doors, paint, lighting and the backsplash. A remodel changes the layout. We price both if you are not sure.
Living through it
We set up a temporary spot with the fridge and microwave, keep dust walls up and clean daily.
Nearby
We also build kitchens in Clyde, Wolcott, Red Creek, Port Byron and across Wayne County.

Do I need a permit for a kitchen in Savannah?
For moving plumbing, adding circuits or opening walls, yes, from the Town of Savannah code enforcement officer. Like-for-like cabinet swaps often do not. We confirm with the office.
Our farmhouse floor sags in the kitchen. Can it be fixed?
Yes. We check the joists and sill from the basement or crawlspace and reinforce or level before cabinets go in.
Can you add an island to an old farm kitchen?
Usually. We check clearances, then run power for outlets and decide if the sink or cooktop moves to it.
We have well water. Does that change anything?
It can. We plan room for a filter or softener under the sink or in the basement, and add good shutoffs.
Can I keep my old cabinets?
If they are solid, yes. We can reface or paint them and change counters and hardware.
Can you tie in the mudroom?
Yes. A bench, hooks and a tough floor at the back door are common add-ons to a farmhouse kitchen job.
