Aging in Place Remodeling in Macedon, NY
Split-levels with stairs at every turn, two-story colonials with the bedrooms up top, and old canal houses with a bath at the end of a steep stair. We make them work for the years ahead.
Where Macedon houses get harder
The style of the house usually tells us where the problems are.
The split-level shuffle
Half a flight up to bed, half a flight down to the den. In a split-level, every trip is stairs. Rails on both sides help, and a main-level bedroom and bath help most.
Bedrooms all upstairs
Many two-story homes from that era put every bedroom and full bath on the second floor. A den or dining room on the first floor can become a bedroom with a new full bath nearby.
A garage step into the house
Two or three steps from the garage into the kitchen are hard with a cane or groceries. We rebuild them with a landing and rails, or ramp them where there is room.
A tub-shower combo
The standard tub-shower is the most common bath here and one of the hardest to use later. We tear it out and build a low-curb or curbless shower.

Built for young families, lived in for decades
A lot of Macedon’s housing went up between 1940 and 1999, including the early Gananda neighborhoods laid out in the 1970s. Those houses were designed for families with small kids: bedrooms upstairs, a step down to the family room, a step up from the garage.
Many of the same families still live in them. We look at how you move through the house now and change the parts that are getting risky. If an occupational therapist has given you recommendations, we follow them.
- Main-level bedroom and bath conversions
- Garage entries rebuilt with rails

Steps toward staying home
Notice the hard parts
The step you dread, the tub you avoid, the switch you cannot reach. Write them down.
Get your OT’s input
Their measurements tell us bar heights, seat heights and clearances.
Walkthrough
We measure doors, check stairs and the garage entry, and look for first-floor space.
Town permits
New baths, moved walls and ramps go through the Town of Macedon building department at 32 Main Street, for the former village too. We file them.
Phase the work
Most people start with the shower. We plan everything so later phases fit.
How the work gets done
Full bath replacements only
We remove the old tub or shower to the studs and build new. We never install liners, overlays or one-day bath systems. Walk-in showers with low or no curb, benches, handhelds and slip-resistant tile are the usual choices, and walk-in tubs are available.
Blocking for bars
Wood blocking goes in the walls before they close up, so grab bars hold and can be added later in any spot.
Small changes that add up
Lever handles, rocker switches, comfort-height toilets, wider doorways, brighter stair and hall lighting, and rails on both sides of every stair.
Program paperwork
Some assistance programs need a written scope and price. We provide it. We do not promise grants.

What Macedon owners ask
Can a split-level really work for aging in place?
Often, if the main level can hold a bedroom and full bath. We look at the layout and tell you honestly.
Do you install bath liners?
No. Every bath we build is a full replacement.
Who issues the permit for a new first-floor bath?
The Town of Macedon building department. That covers the former village as well. We apply.
Can you ramp our garage entry?
Where the garage is deep enough, yes. Otherwise we rebuild the steps with a landing and two rails.
Will you follow my occupational therapist’s plan?
Yes. Send it over and we build to it.
Is there funding for this?
Some programs help. We cannot promise funding, but we can give you the written scope they ask for.
