Built by the canal and the railroad
Clyde grew along the Clyde River and the first Erie Canal, which ran as a narrow ditch through downtown before the Barge Canal moved boats into the river in 1918. The railroad arrived in 1853, and a glass works made bottles here into the early 1900s. The downtown historic district, listed in 2019, has canal-era Greek Revival buildings and Italianate homes around Washington Square Park.

Permits in Clyde and Galen
The village appoints its own code enforcement officer, who issues permits for alterations under the state code. Galen’s code office covers the rest of the town. Galen also asks for stamped plans on larger renovations, so bigger whole-house jobs may need a design professional. We tell you up front.

The 2019 National Register listing recognizes the district. Interior remodels are normally handled through the village code office like any other. We check what applies to your address before work starts.
Should I keep my plaster walls?
If they are mostly sound, repair can keep the character. If they are failing everywhere, drywall is faster to finish. We show you both and you decide.
Who handles permits in the Town of Galen?
The Galen zoning and code enforcement office. Homes inside Clyde village go through the village office. We file either one.
Can you update my wiring while remodeling?
