The bathroom is upstairs
In a lot of older Huron farmhouses the only full bath is at the top of a narrow stair. A first-floor bath, sometimes in a back bedroom or old pantry, can mean you never have to climb it at night.
Stepping over the tub wall
A high tub edge is one of the hardest things in an aging house. We tear out the tub and build a walk-in shower with a low or no curb, a bench and a handheld.
Icy steps at the door
Lake winds blow snow across Huron’s open fields and onto the steps. We rebuild entries with solid rails, better lighting and, where the lot allows, a ramp or a no-step path.
A cottage with level changes
Bay cottages added on over the years often have a step down into every room. We can ramp, level or rail those changes so the house is safe to walk.

The Town of Huron’s waterfront plan reported a median age of 46.4 in the 2010 Census, well above the county figure, with nearly one in five residents 65 or older. Many people here have lived on the same farm or the same bay for decades and plan to stay.

Where do you hold the wall? Which step makes you nervous? Where is it dark at night? Write it down.
Ask your OT or doctor for input
If you have an occupational therapist, their notes help us put bars, seats and controls in the right places.
Have us walk it
We check doorway widths, stair rails, the bath layout and the entry, and look at where a first-floor bath could go.
Let us handle the town
A new bath, moved walls or a ramp generally needs a Town of Huron building permit from Town Hall on Lummisville Road. We apply and meet the inspector.
Phase it if you need to
Shower first, entry next, doorways later. We plan it all at once so the phases fit.
How we build it
Showers and tubs
Every bath job is a full tear-out to the studs and floor. We do not put liners or overlays over old tubs. You can have a curbless or low-curb walk-in shower, a fold-down or built-in bench, a handheld on a slide bar, and slip-resistant tile. Walk-in tubs are also an option.
Grab bars that hold
Bars screwed into drywall pull out. We put solid wood blocking in the wall before it is closed so bars can go exactly where you need them, now or later.
Doors, handles and light
Wider doorways where walls allow, lever handles instead of knobs, rocker switches, comfort-height toilets and brighter lighting in halls and stairs.

Some programs want a written scope and price before they help. We can provide that. We cannot promise any grant or funding.

Common questions
Our farmhouse only has a bath upstairs. Can we add one downstairs?
Usually. We look for a room on the first floor near existing plumbing, like a back bedroom, pantry or mudroom, and convert it into a full bath with a walk-in shower. It needs a town permit, which we pull.
Do you install tub liners or one-day bath systems?
No. We take the old tub or shower out completely and build new. It costs more than a liner and lasts far longer.
Can you build a ramp at a bay cottage?
Often. It depends on the lot, the slope and how close the house is to the line. We look at it and tell you what will work.
Will you work with my occupational therapist?
Yes. Send us their recommendations and we will build to them.
Can you help me get a grant for the work?
We cannot promise funding. We can give you the written scope and price that most programs ask for.
